UE Statement on Obergefell v. Hodges

Unmarried Equality joins in the celebration of the Supreme Court’s long overdue decision that marriage will now be a CHOICE for all! We also call on the U.S. to remember all of us are not married — single people and those in relationships who choose not to marry or cannot marry for a variety of […]

3 Roads to Social Justice – For Lasting Change, We Must Follow Them All

[This is the third in my new series of monthly columns. The views expressed here are my own and not the official positions of Unmarried Equality.] “Unmarried Equality (UE) advocates for equality and fairness for unmarried people, including people who are single, choose not to marry, cannot marry, or live together before marriage.” That’s the […]

UE is Seeking New Members for our Board

Unmarried Equality is seeking individuals willing to serve on our board of directors. The main commitment for board members is to be on monthly board meeting conference calls that last about an hour. The board also has standing committees that can take an hour or two per month of your time. Being a board member […]

American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Advocates Marriage for Health and Other Benefits. Sign our Petition!

ACOG’s endorsement of same-sex marriage states that it  “advocates for all of our patients’ health and well-being,” but does nothing of the sort.  It recommends marriage as  a means to financial security and improved benefits in healthcare, social security, and shared property.   Unmarried Equality calls ACOG on its perpetuation of marital status discrimination in a […]

Celebrating Progress in the Face of Those Who Fear It

We try to keep on top of activities that work against our goals, and wanted to share something that recently came through our media alerts. Here at Unmarried Equality we advocate for unmarried, cohabiting and polyamorous relationships.  Within the “unmarried” category we recognize single people,  those in committed relationships, those in legal domestic partnerships, and […]

Living Single Comes at a HIGH Price

Over 1,300 federal laws and discriminatory practices by corporations result in single adults potentially paying over $1 million more for necessities such as taxes, housing, health insurance, and car insurance during their lifetimes than legally married counterparts.  They are charged premiums for travelling alone, miss out on “family” discounts, and have to form loose coops in […]

New Name, New Look – Same Mission!

Welcome to the website of Unmarried Equality. Unmarried Equality began as the “Alternatives to Marriage Project” over 12 years ago. Our name is shorter and easier to remember, but our mission has not changed. (Name and logo rationale documents.)

If you believe that unmarried people have the same worth and dignity as married people, this is where you belong. Members of Unmarried Equality believe that discrimination on the basis of marital status is unfair and counterproductive in a society that cares for all its members.
