Connect to a community of people like you
This week I received a note from “Eleanor Rigby,” a long-time AtMP member, requesting fewer lectures and more opportunities to vent. Her note reminded me that, on average, people who fill out our online survey say that “being connected to a community of people like me” is “important” to them, with 70% of all respondents ranking it “important” or “very important.” People who answer the survey question “is there a way we can make our website better meet your needs?” often request message boards.
Message boards are beyond our range, but we have long hosted three different venues for venting and interactive conversation. They have been underutilized lately, so I encourage you to jump in and start talking!
AtMP-Talk – an email listserve with over 500 members. Recent posts have included interesting news clips, explorations of how to interpret statistics, and questions like “what do you say when people ask why you’re not married?” We even had stormy debate with a professional marriage promoter. There’s no archive, there are rules, and posts are moderated.
Facebook - in addition to liking and commenting on the wall, you can have a discussion with nearly 1,600 fans. This app is not moderated, so I hope you’ll keep things relevant and polite!
Blog comments – Of course, you can also comment on any posting to this blog, and I hope you will! Comments are moderated.
So, it’s your turn: join the conversation!

Who’s in charge here? Could be you!
The Alternatives to Marriage Project is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, lead by a national board of directors. AtMP’s staff is small, so it’s board does a lot; if it were bigger it could do even more! We’re actively recruiting to grow our volunteer leadership team – click here for more about who’s currently on the board, what we’re looking for, and how to apply.
Examples of what various board members did in recent days: edited a membership email, evaluated listserve hosting technology, educated friends about the role of marital status in immigration policy, made a personal connection with a grant-making foundation, and reached out to potential new board members.
We’re especially seeking strategic thinkers and hands-on achievers who are, of course, 100% committed to the mission. If that’s you, we want to hear from you. If you know the perfect person, please introduce us!
New Yorkers celebrate Unmarried Pride with AtMP

The party featured a bountiful table of sweets, raffle prizes and books about alternatives to a marriage-based legal system.
Last Sunday, AtMP board member Kevin Maillard and his partner Iris hosted a lovely party for AtMP in their Manhattan apartment. The gathering was an opportunity for them to introduce AtMP to their family and friends, and to meet other New Yorkers who are already members of the AtMP family. Many of the guests were academics like Kevin or lawyers like Iris.

Rose Cuison Villazor and Kevin Maillard are co-editors of a book on race, sex and marriage that is due out in 2010.
